These are the lyrics of a traditional German Christmas carol. A Christmas celebration without a Christmas tree is unimaginable. Kids are as excited about the Christmas tree as they are about Santa. While plastic, feather and optic trees are available in the market, they can never match the charm of a real Christmas tree.
Plant nurseries in the city are gearing up to fulfil the customers’ demands. “We get five to ten orders each day,” informs Ashok Shah, proprietor, Flora Land Nursery in Bandra. He adds that though they keep getting orders sales are better around Christmas. “Families buy the plant as a decorative item,” informs Kalpesh Prajapati, proprietor, New Meena Nursery in Santacruz. His nursery gets 10 to 12 orders per day.
The botanical name of the Christmas tree available in Mumbai is Araucaria. The tree is available in many sizes. Shah says that as Araucaria is a fancy plant, people buy it to decorate their homes even after Christmas.
Kiran Mehta, proprietor, Lila Nursery in Santacruz, says they order the trees from Bangalore. But this year, his nursery is facing a “recession period” as there have been no enquiries yet. “A 2 ft tree costs about Rs 250, a 4 ft tree Rs 450 and an 8 ft tree costs Rs1,000,” informs Mehta.
Evergreen Garden and Nursery in Powai orders Christmas trees from its Pune farm. Ditto for New Meena Nursery, which orders the trees from its Talegaon farm in Pune.
For Christmas, plants between 2 ft and 5 ft are in demand, while during off-season, smaller plants of up to 1 ft are preferred.
The ‘Christmas plant’ turns red in the four months of winter, while in the other eight months, it is green. The price of a 5 ft Christmas plant is Rs 400.
