NEW DELHI: CBI has filed a chargesheet against an officer of the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), accusing him of amassing assets to the tune of Rs 23.47 lakh, disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The probe agency sought prosecution of Janak Raj, 58, who is working as assistant drug controller, under various provisions of the Prevention of the Corruption Act.

In the chargesheet filed in the court of special judge Vinod Goel, the CBI alleged that Raj, who had joined the DGHS as assistant chemist in 1970, acquired assets to the tune of Rs 40.95 lakh.

Allegedly, the income of the officer from his known means was found to be Rs 29.33 lakh while his expenses were pegged at Rs 11.85 lakh, his wife and two children were not employed.

"His wife claimed to be a teacher with a school which was non-existent, while his two children were studying," the CBI claimed.

The agency, which listed as many as 52 witnesses in the chargesheet, has taken permission from the Ministry of Health for prosecution of the officer.

According to the probe agency, the accused had amassed the wealth between January 2000 to May 2005.
