The designer talks about his ultimate dream and delayed initiatives

Think Indian bridal trousseaux and Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s name instantly comes to mind. Straddling the different worlds of fashion collections and shows on one hand, and film and ad shoots on the other, Sabya points out, “I can be narcissistic as far as the former is concerned, but when it comes to ads and films, I must go as per the director’s vision.”

In the city for a bridal shoot, Sabya admits that his ultimate dream is to do what Fab India has done. “Their clothes represent India very well. In the light of the recent terror attacks, I feel that we should assert our unity through our Indianness in clothing. We ought to change the whole concept of Friday dressing in the corporate sector. As opposed to casuals, why can’t we decide to wear traditional wear on Fridays?”

He continues in the same vein, “Think about it, men and women in Indian traditional wear is the first step towards feeling Indian… and thinking like one. Picture this — men in kurtas and women in saris or salwar kurtas at CST station on a busy Friday morning.

I am actually planning to approach the Planning Commission of India with this suggestion and hopefully, the corporate sector will also sit up and take note of it,” he ends.

His initiative — the co-operative workshops for women — hasn’t seen much progress though. He rues, “I have been so busy in the last four months that I haven’t been able to move to my new apartment. By next August, I will have set up my first co-operative workshop in Kolkata.”

Roped in by the World Gold Council for their ad, he points out that he is also working on Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. Though he will be doing the look for two other big-budget films, his own directorial project has been postponed. “I will definitely do my movie but at a later date. I hope to do that when my extremely media shy sister, Payal, readies to take over the reins of the label,” notes Sabya.
