NEW DELHI: Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta was under fire from the government on Wednesday for his press conference on Tuesday, in which he blasted the media and called them “disabling instrument” of the nation.

Defence minister AK Antony is believed to have conveyed his concern to Mehta about his outburst against the media, especially against the NDTV coverage during Kargil, which “resulted in the death of three soldiers”.

Apart from that, the Coast Guard was furious on Wednesday at Mehta’s claim at the press conference that they had intercepted Gujarati fishing trawler Kuber, carrying terrorists to Mumbai.

The Coast Guard put on record with the ministry that it had not intercepted Kuber.
Mehta had also told the media that the terrorists got away from the Coast Guard by showing fake identity cards. After the Coast Guard protested, the Navy is believed to have clarified that Mehta had based his statement on a wrong media report.
