NEW DELHI: The Congress stoutly defended on Wednesday general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s decision to attend a friend’s pre-wedding ceremony during last week’s terrorist attack on Mumbai. “Nobody from the Congress organised the party. He attended the wedding of his friend since childhood, what’s wrong in it?” AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh said.

The ceremony in question was a sangeet last Saturday before Rajya Sabha MP Satish Sharma’s son Sameer’s wedding that was solemnised in the capital in a low-key manner on Tuesday.

Sameer and his sister are close friends of Rahul and sister Priyanka and are often spotted at their family and social gatherings. The sangeet was held at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Delhi.

Satish Sharma is a close friend of the Gandhis. He had worked with former prime minister the late Rajiv Gandhi during his stint with the Indian Airlines.

Congress sources said Rahul was in Pushkar, Rajasthan, when terrorists attacked Mumbai. After finishing poll campaigning there, he came back to the capital and attended a Congress working committee meeting before attending the sangeet.

“He finished all his work and then went to his friend’s ceremony, where is the problem? Many others too attended it,” party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan.
