The Singapore Open winner teams up with Jyoti Randhawa to lead Indian challenge at the World Cup which begins today

MUMBAI: Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa will team up for the first time to take on golfers from 27 other countries at the $ 5.5 million Omega Mission Hills World Cup 2008 in China. The event will take place from November 27-30.

This is Jeev’s debut World Cup and the Singapore Open winner would hope to cap his stellar season with a win. The Chandigarh golfer is ranked 45th in the world after wins in Europe, Japan and Asia.

“We both are looking forward to the tournament and are confident of our chances. It will come down to putting in the end,” Jeev told DNA from Mission Hills on Wednesday.

“I’ve always had to defend a tournament or keep my card somewhere. But this time we had direct entry through the world rankings. I am excited about playing the World Cup for the first time,” said Jeev.

They begin their campaign against the Welsh pair of Bradley Dredge and Richard Johnson in the fourball (better-ball) first round on Thursday. Dredge is a former champion, who along with Stephen Dodd won the tournament back in 2005 at the Victoria Clube de Golfe Course in Portugal. Randhawa and Arjun Atwal finished 9th that year. Randhawa would be hoping to do better this time.

Not having played as a team could prove to be a disadvantage, but Jeev is positive that they will get along well with each other. “If he hits a bad shot or I hit a bad shot, we’re not going to say sorry. It is part of the game. We will keep each other on our toes.”

The event though has failed to attract any big names with the Swedish team of Robert Karlsson (6) and Henrik Stenson (12) being the two highest ranked players in the World Cup of Golf.
