Unused funds may be transferred to other states

NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to act tough against states that are not properly utilising the huge funds provided to them for police modernisation to face the growing internal security challenges. This could result in erring states loosing out on future financial allocations.

Delving on the issue during the conference of DGPs here on Saturday, Home Minister Shivraj Patil accepted a suggestion that the underutilised funds of the non-performing states could be transferred to those showing better performance. “Such a decision could be helpful,” he said.

“The Centre can monitor the spending of the funds allocated by it to the states,” a highly placed ministry source said. He further felt that such a mechanism could also result in a healthy competition among the states. Terrorists may even  use nukes, warns Shivraj.

RSS meets in Lucknow to counter charges
LUCKNOW: Amidst allegations of involvement of Hindu organisations in terrorist activities, a five-day meet of the Rashtriya Swyamsewak Sangh (RSS) started here on Saturday. Senior RSS members, including its chief KS Sudarshan, will address an open session on terrorism on Sunday. Some senior BJP leaders are also expected to take part.

Meanwhile, in Delhi, the RSS denied that its senior leader Indresh Kumar has any link with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as alleged by the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad.

ATS sources had been quoted alleging that Lt Col Shrikant Purohit, prime accused in the Malegaon blast case, had conspired to kill Indresh Kumar and RSS general secretary Mohan Bhagwat. A spokesman said linking Indresh with ISI was a conspiracy to malign the organisation. Disparate groups involved, says police.
