The decision to close down the Deonar dumping ground was embroiled in an ugly debate, as members across party lines raised more than a 100 questions at the BMC’s Standing Committee meeting, stalling proceedings.

The twin projects were undertaken by the civic body at a cost of Rs5,000 crore, over a period of 25 years.

BMC officials say they plan to set up a waste-processing plant and sanitary landfill with the help of a private company. The project will also help the BMC earn carbon credits.

The proposal to shut down the dumping ground was tabled in the Standing Committee on Wednesday, with all 26 members asking at least 10 questions each. They insisted that unless they received satisfactory answers, they would not allow the project to pass.
Sunil Prabhu, leader of the house in the BMC, asked 13 questions. He wanted to know “whether the company is going to set up a fertiliser project on the dumping grounds after it is closed and how much amount will it fetch the BMC. Why had the BMC rejected other companies?”

Congress corporator Sameer Desai asked 22 questions, Niyaz Vanu, NCP leader asked 15 and Prabhakar Shinde, Sena corporator, raised 12 queries. Opposition leader Rajhans Singh, Congress corporator Vinod Shekhar, BJP leader in the BMC Bhalchandra Shirsat, corporator Yogesh Sagar, Sena corporator Mangesh Satamkar and NCP’s Mangesh Bansod raised a wide range of questions on technical and social issues related to the dumping ground.

“The BMC is not a laboratory for the officer who comes here for three years, and will implement their idea for 25 years,” Rajhans Singh said, while Vinod Shekhar demanded a public debate on the issue.
