LONDON: Fans of Sir Paul McCartney can hope to lay their hands on a rare handwritten poem with a rough cartoon by the Beatles star that will go under the hammer later this month.

The poem on one side of the paper by the former Beatle for his friend Spike Milligan has a rough cartoon on the reverse, featuring a man and woman wearing large smiles and scruffy haircuts, both giving a thumbs-up sign.

McCartney wrote a ditty called 'The Poet of Dumbswoman Lane' while on the reverse he drew a rough cartoon titled 'The Nutters of Starvecrow Lane'.

The poem, which is to be auctioned by Bonhams on November 25 as part of a large-sale of Milligan memorabilia, is expected to fetch between 1,500 pounds to 2,000 pounds, the Daily Telegraph reported.

According to Milligan's widow Shelagh, who is selling the collection, the sensational singer often used to drop into their house in Rye, East Sussex, for a cup of tea when he was visiting a recording studio in the town.

Last week, McCartney had indicated that fans could soon get to hear a "lost" Beatles epic, with the singer saying the time has come to release 1967's 'Carnival of Light'.

The 14-minute improvised track has gained mythical status as it has been played just once at a London music festival. It was never released because three of the Fab Four thought it too "adventurous".

In the 40 years since it was recorded by McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon in the Abbey Road studios in London, its collection of disparate rhythms has become a kind of holy grail for Beatles obsessives.

The improvised track, a jumble of shrieks and psychedelic effects, is said to be as far from the melodic ballads that made Sir Paul famous.
