The IIM-A’s meet Pratyarpan on Sunday saw a major impetus being given by students from across the country, at the Ravi Mathai Hall, to problems and solutions for local issues and the relevance of social business plans.

Speaking about the event, Anil Gupta, professor of IIM-A and mentor of Pratyarpan said although the rich people are on top of the economic pyramid, knowledge and ideas are not confined to that area. “Knowledge and ideas can also be present at the bottom of the economic pyramid and this should be taken into account before tackling social problems,” he said.

The event included speeches from many philanthropic individuals like Bhushan Punani, executive director of Blind Peoples Association, Ritu Biyani, who spreads cancer awareness, Puneet Gupta- senior V-P, IFMR Trust; Osama Manzar from Digital Empowerment Foundation and Parth Vasavada from Yuva. The speakers shared their ideas on social entrepreneurship. The event also hosted the inauguration of the website www.volstreet.com which would provide a networking platform where one can register as a volunteer, NGO, corporate social responsibility agent and volunteer to work on social developments posted on the site. The event also saw the launching the book Pursuit of Goodness written by Vijayendra Haryal, an IIM-A alumnus.

The social business plan competition — Rachana, had teams from various institutes exhibiting their innovative ideas for socially-relevant business plans. Some of the plans brought up in the event were Dristivani — a community radio channel run for the blind and by the blind; Kashish — a website to find life partners for differently abled people, among others.

The event Ek Samadhan—which called for solutions to local problems, received a good response. A participant cited the problems of traffic, wherein two wheelers whiz past the traffic lights as they hate to stand and wait under the hot sun. As a solution, the participant suggested the provision of a roof over the entire traffic light area extending to a certain distance on the roads.
