Wants to scale up its certification income quickly

BANGALORE: Wipro Technologies’ software testing and certification unit, Wipro Testing Services, is scouting for a software certification company to ramp up its offering in that space.

The third largest information technology company, which began offering certification services in 2006, currently has the capability to certify wi-fi equipment, Microsoft Vista and Citic. The company wants to extend this service to other software products and applications. It also wants to initiate industry compliance certification.

Vittal Vashist N, general manager (testing services - presale, support and strategic initiative), Wipro, said the company wants to scale up quickly in the certification service space. “So we are exploring the inorganic route. The ticket size will be between $25 million and over $100 million depending on the infrastructure that the company has,” he said.

The Azim Premji-owned company is already the market leader in the software testing space in the US with a 12% market share, followed by TCS and IBM at the second and third positions with 11% and 9%, respectively.

In the September quarter, Wipro bagged a $100-million deal for independent testing from a banking client in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.
Sanjay Seth, general manager (global alliance & marketing testing services division), said that the company is now looking to grow its certification revenues, which are currently just 3% of the Rs 1,800-crore ($383 million) earnings of Wipro Testing Services.

Vashist added that once the company develops complete certification capabilities, it would be able offer end-to-end (from concept to certification) testing and certification services to customers. This will enable the company to charge a premium. “We are seeing over 100% growth in our certification revenue, though it is on a smaller base,” said Seth.

Wipro’s software testing division has seen a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 67% in the last five years. It has set up the first wi-fi pre-certification and certification lab in India and has the largest pool of HP (Mercury) trained and certified testing professionals.
