BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court recently quashed a government notification that extends its language policy from the first to fifth standard.
Single Judge Hulavadi G Ramesh stated that the government notification has been nullified on account of a High Court full bench order on July 2.
After hearing petitions filed by the Daffodils English School and others, the judge ordered that English medium schools can function in the state from the next academic year.
The story so far
In April 29, 1994, the Karnataka government had issued a notification stating that Kannada should be the medium of instruction the first to fourth standard.
After the central government announced its Primary Education Policy in 2002, the state extended its notification to the fifth standard - a move that was challenged by many English medium schools.
