Both countries have a Aviation Cooperation Programme going

HYDERABAD: Even as American aviation biggies consolidate their presence in the Indian market, the US government is keen on introducing this mart to its small and medium enterprises (SMEs), a top official said.

“We have strong SMEs focusing on the high end of the technology. The participation of these SMEs in the Indian aviation market will help deepen and broaden the cooperation between the two countries,” said Carmine d’Aloisio, minister counsellor at the US Embassy.

D’Aloisio is part of the US trade mission at the India Aviation 2008 being held in Hyderabad. The US is the partner country for the event.

“Many SMEs in the US have the capability to cater to the needs of the Indian market. They are keen on getting their supplies to India,” he said. According to US Commercial Services officials, the two countries have already been working close on various issues such as regulation, certification, MROs and training.

They have been working on the civil aviation sector jointly through the Aviation Cooperation Programme (ACP), a public private partnership initiative launched in 2007.

About 18 American companies are part of the ACP and have been exploring and tapping the potential of the domestic market.

“The ACP has been working very well. The partnership has been strengthened through funding from the US Trade Development Agency, technical expertise from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration and the support of the US Embassy,” d’Aloisio said.

Under the ACP, the US has already taken up several projects in the country.  Officials said that the first project focusing on air traffic management is close to completion and the second would be a seminar on air traffic flow management next week in New Delhi.

“Future projects include a range of activities designed to build the professional,
regulatory and technical capacities needed to maintain strong safety oversight in India’s airspace,” d’Aloisio said.

The officials claimed that the funding programme initiated by the US to support the
domestic aviation sector is helping Indian carriers acquire new aircraft.

The US Export-Import Bank is funding the acquisition of Boeing aircraft by Air India. Similarly, Jet Airways too is said to be seeking funds support from the bank.
