Say regularisation of unauthorised colonies in the capital will compound their problems

NEW DELHI: In what could be an embarrassment for the Delhi government, the Delhi Fire Services has said regularisation of unauthorised colonies in the capital will compound problems for them to tackle fire incidents in those areas.

A senior Fire Services official said although the government had sought a report from it before deciding to regularise the unauthorised colonies, it did not pay any heed to the findings.

“Our report opposed regularisation of the colonies as there is no basic infrastructure to tackle incidents of fire there. Instead of demolishing these colonies, they are regularising them. It will put added strain on the Fire Services,” he said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday distributed provisional regularisation certificates to unauthorised colonies at a public rally which was seen as the launch of the party’s campaign for the coming assembly polls. Delhi BJP described the regularisation of the colonies as a “gimmick and total eyewash”.

The official also criticised the new Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) saying its full implementation will make it “extremely difficult” for them to tackle fire incidents in the city.

The official said the MPD 2021 allows high-rise buildings and mixed and commercial use of roads which will create problems for disaster management agencies during crisis. “The proper implementation of the MPD will make it difficult for my department to deal with incidents of fire as allowing commercial and mixed use of roads will make the roads congested, resulting in delay in reaching the spot,” the official said adding they will have to tackle any incident of fire whether it takes place in an authorised or unauthorised colony.

He also identified encroachments and unplanned growth as major fire hazards in the city.

The official said lack of proper fire safety norms are resulting in fire mishaps in the city.
