Haryana spinner says his efforts have paid off

MUMBAI: Tuesday’s selection committee meeting was all about surprises. First it was former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, dropped for the Irani Trophy tie, who was retained for the India-Australia series. And then Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath finally made it to the Test squad for his consistent performances at first class level.

However, the selection of leg-spinner Amit Mishra was the real shocker. He was not even considered in the reckoning before the first selection meeting of the new committee began on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old though is not surprised with his inclusion for the crucial series. “I have been performing regularly at the domestic level over the last few years. Also, I did well against the Australia A. I have been expecting a call for quite a sometime. It is not a surprise for me,” he told DNA from Chennai, where he played for India A against New Zealand A on Wednesday, taking three wickets.

Mishra, who last played an ODI for India in Bangladesh in 2003, feels that it was his consistency that saw him make his way into the squad. “I was disappointed that I was dropped after the Bangladesh tour. Then I worked hard on my bowling and the only thing on my mind was to perform consistently. I did just that which earned me a place in the team,” he said.

The India-Australia series has always been quite competitive and especially after the Sydney fiasco. Does he feel nervous to make his comeback against them? “I am not nervous but there is some pressure and it will only help me perform better,” he said. The Haryana lad is keen to learn the skills from the Indian skipper Anil Kumble. “I would love to speak to him and take some tips,” said Mishra.
