TIRUCHIRAPPALLI (TN): The DMK would consider sharing power with the Congress in the state, if the party is made part of the Congress government in neighbouring Puducherry, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said.

He also said a proposal in this regard should come from AICC high command.

Speaking here last night after receiving the Periyar Award conferred by the DMK in recognition of his contributions to society during more than 70 years of his political carrier, Karunanidhi said "power sharing in Tamil Nadu would be subjected to two conditions."

"The first one is that power sharing should also be considered in Pondicherry and the second is that the proposal should come from the Congress high command," he said.

He said even if the proposal came from the Congress high command, it would be subjected to approval by the executive committee and general council of the DMK.

On TNCC president V Thankgabalu welcoming his Sunday's announcement that DMK would consider any proposal on power sharing from Congress, Karunanidhi said, "the power sharing is between me and the high command," hinting that the state unit had no authority whatsoever to talk about it.

Underlining the need to prevent communal forces rearing their head, he said the Congress and the DMK were firm that communal forces were not allowed to stage a comeback.

"We should not permit the differences in the alliance to allow communal forces to stage a come back. The alliance should continue. Only if the communal forces are checked, peace and harmony will grow in the state," he said.

DMK which has 96 members in the 234 member state assembly is dependent on the support extended by the 36 member Congress from outside. Similarly the minority Congress ministry is supported from outside by the DMK in union territory Puducherry.

Karunanidhi said when the DMK aligned with the BJP in the past, certain  conditions were laid down. When that party broke away from the Common Minimum Programme, the ties also broke down, he said.

On the Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's appeal to him to launch a revolution against social evils, he said "we are engaged in spreading rationalism already."
