LONDON: Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton, anxious to prove she is not sitting round waiting for the future king "to click his fingers," took part in a roller disco in hotpants in memory of an old friend.

The royal girlfriend helped to organise the "tongue in cheek" event in Vauxhall, London to raise money for a charity set up in memory of an old school pal Thomas Waley-Cohen, who died from bone cancer in 2004 at the age of 20.

The 26-year-old beauty, who once worked at the fashion chain Jigsaw, lit up the floor as she zoomed round the room in a sequinned turquoise halterneck, yellow hotpants and knee-length electric pink socks.

Her efforts were not in vain. Hundreds of people turned out to help raise 100,000 pounds for a new surgical ward at Oxford Children's Hospital, set up in memory of Thomas Waley-Cohen, who died from bone cancer in 2004 when he was just 20.

"We wanted to do something fresh and new; something that would be fun and a bit tongue in cheek, reflecting the lighter side of life; very much like Thomas was himself," Waley-Cohen's brother Sam was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph on Thursday.

"Kate has been fantastic in using her contacts to get people along - she has persuaded loads of people to commit. Her involvement has obviously raised the profile," he added.

Recently, media reports had said that the British Queen had told the Prince not to consider announcing an engagement to his sweetheart till Kate "gets a proper job."
