Plans offices in China, Germany; sees global ops contributing 25% to revenues in 2-3 yrs

MUMBAI: Transport Corporation of India (TCI), country’s largest logistics provider, is aggressively pursuing its business expansion in the overseas market. With plans to establish presence in 26 countries by 2010, the company says global business would be a significant growth driver.

“The global division would contribute about 25% to the company’s revenues in the next 2-3 years,” said Chander Agarwal, executive director at TCI.

Agarwal said that currently the client base was small and the revenue contribution around 1%. The company reported revenues of Rs 1242.8 crore in FY08.

TCI is strategically looking to establish its presence in key countries, which have trade with India. “We have a large plan to be in all core countries, about 26 of them, in the next 2 years, with whom India trades,” Agarwal said.

TCI is now setting up offices in China and Germany, which would start in a month’s time. Since, the highest volume of trade from India into Europe is to Germany, and into Asia is to China, these make for the ideal locations.

This would be followed by entry into Dubai and Taiwan, both planned for the current financial year. The company currently operates out of Jakarta, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore.

Besides, the first office in Frankfurt, TCI is considering two more locations in Hamburg and Stuttgart, depending on client needs. Similar plans are in store for business in China, where operations would eventually be rolled out of 2-3 more locations apart from Shanghai.

TCI would provide all logistics support like export, import and air cargo handling, domestic transport (trucking), courier and express business in Germany. “TCI would try to provide services itself as far as possible, but would also look at tying up with local firms if needed,” Agarwal said.

TCI is looking at these global offices to expand its offerings and provide an end-to-end solution. The company is currently operating through owned assets and manpower in all these locations.

The company employs 30 people in the five countries it operates, but going forward the company might look at outsourcing jobs, as the new mantra is to go for a lower headcount, Agarwal said.
