Twenty-one-year-old Ravi Saxena was envious of his step brother’s luxurious lifestyle. Fuelled by his desire to also live a life of comforts, Saxena, a hotel management student of Ramaiyaa College in Bangalore, allegedly stole cash amounting to Rs16.25 lakh from his step-brother’s house in Vile Parle.

Saxena’s step-brother Rahul, who owns the Rahul Saxena Dance Academy, had invited him for a party on August 15 at his Moti Nivas residence. After the party, Rahul left for Bangkok, while Saxena took an auto rickshaw to a nearby bus stand to catch a Volvo bus for Bangalore.

“He, however, left the auto rickshaw when he saw that Rahul had reached a considerable distance and then went to Rahul’s residence. He opened the door with duplicate keys, broke open the cupboard lock using a screw driver, and fled with cash worth Rs16.25 lakh which he had spotted in the cupboard during the party,” said assistant police inspector Rajendra Kane. After the incident, Saxena stayed in a lodge at Vile Parle and boarded a bus for Bangalore on August 16.

The robbery came to light when a friend of Rahul came to the apartment to get it cleaned after Rahul had informed him that his sister was going to visit him. “When his friend saw the cupboard ransacked the next day, he immediately approached the police and also informed Rahul,” Kane said.

Rahul returned from Bangkok on August 18 and provided all the necessary details to the police. According to Kane, the vital lead in the case was that Rahul had seen
Saxena get down from the rickshaw, soon after boarding it. Besides, the police also found that there was no Volvo bus service available that day for Bangalore. “We learnt that Saxena would be returning to Mumbai on August 19 as his third year exams were over. We picked him up from the airport for interrogations during which he confessed to the crime,” said Kane.

In his statement to the police, Saxena said that he wanted to live a lavish life like his step brother and when he saw the money on the night of the party, he made up his mind to rob it.

Saxena bought an Accent car in Bangalore with the money, however, since he did not provide with all the documents, he did not get the vehicle.

Saxena further told the police that he was depressed after stealing the money and narrated the entire incident to his girlfriend. He felt guilty as Rahul was helping him monetarily and was also paying for his education, police said. His girlfriend tried to persuade him to confess to his brother, but he could not gather the courage.

Rahul, popular choreographer, has trained several television and film celebrities in various dance styles in the industry.
