Heavy showers over the last few days have pushed up the monsoon death toll to 96, with six people succumbing to malaria and fever in the last 24 hours. Malaria has claimed the highest number of lives with 11 people dying in the first week of August itself and 29 since June.

A 60-year-old male patient from Dadar was admitted to the KEM Hospital, Parel, with malaria on Friday morning. He showed symptoms of mixed malaria-strains of both Vivax and Falciparum, and died within 24 hours of admission. A 46-year-old resident of Reay Road who was admitted to JJ Hospital, Byculla, on Tuesday also died on Saturday due to mixed malaria.

P Falciparum, the deadlier strain of malaria, killed a 50-year-old resident of Masjid Bunder who was admitted to Nair Hospital on Saturday. He died within hours of admission to the hospital. Another 20-year-old male patient from Worli also succumbed to falciparum malaria hours after being admitted to the Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases. It may be noted that areas like Worli and Prabhadevi have reported many cases of malaria, due to rampant construction work giving rise to mosquitoes. “About 69 patients were admitted due to malaria but the numbers are not very unusual for monsoon,” said Dr Neera Kewalramani, head, epidemiology cell, BMC.

Meanwhile, fever continues to pervade the city, with a 68-year-old female from Goregaon succumbing to fever at the Nair Hospital on Saturday. As many as 301 people have been admitted to various hospitals due to fever over the weekend.

Also, a 35-year-old male patient from Andheri died at KEM Hospital due to gastroenteritis after being admitted on Friday. About 48 people were admitted to civic hospitals due to gastroenteritis and 14 due to leptospirosis.
