Capital may ban the film’s screening if gurdwara panel finds portrayal of Sikhs offensive
NEW DELHI: Akshay Kumar starrer Singh is Kinng might find it difficult to be screened in the capital after it invited the wrath of Sikhs by not only making fun of them but also projecting them in a poor light. And with just a few days left for its release, a Sikh group has now urged the Delhi government to ban the film.
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has also written a letter to Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit asking her to ban the film in the national capital. It has also asked the city authorities to watch the film along the community members so that they could pinpoint all the issues they have with the film.
On Monday, the DSGMC also formed a three-committee member group comprising - two granthis (priests) Harnam Singh and Surinder Singh and Khalsa college professor
Harmeet Singh, an expert on Sikh history — who would watch the film and decide the group’s future course of action. The panel will also take a call on how the movie portrays the community’s members in a poor light.
“The three-member committee would decide on the further course of action. If the committee observes that the film portrays the community negatively, we would urge the government not to release the film in Delhi and would also ask support from our other state organisations,” said Paramjit Singh Sarna, president DSGMC.
Earlier, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the highest Sikh body, had asked its community members to themselves take a call on if they wanted to watch the film.
According to reports, the makers of the film had taken prior help of members from the Sikh community while shooting the film to ensure that none of scenes would offend the sensibilities of any particular community.
