Around 1,000 parents of students from Sacred Heart Boys School, Santa Cruz (west), have found an innovative way to deal with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) threats. Instead of fighting back, parents gathered outside the school on Friday morning and sang hymns and said a prayer in protest against the party’s bullying tactics.
DNA had earlier reported about MNS activists demanding admissions for five children in the school, a month after the academic year had started.
Although the party members withdrew their rally on Thursday evening, harried parents turned out in large numbers fearing trouble on the first day of the unit test examination, which commenced on Friday.
“Who do the MNS activists think they are? All mothers had to leave their household chores as they feared that there will be chaos on the first day of the examination,” said a visibly upset Juliet D’Sa, a PTA member.
“We started off our protest with a prayer because it’s the most effective weapon and the best healer,” she added.
“It is unfair for MNS to ask the school to admit children a month after the school has started,” said Manuka F, another parent.
Children, on the other hand, were terrified on the first day of their exam. Seven-year-old Sadiq Khan, a student, told his mother to stay away from the protest. “Raj Thackeray’s men are bad. They will hurt people,” he said.
However, parents were reassured after they saw Khar police officials patrolling the school premises. “The police have called both parties on Monday to discuss and resolve the matter,” said Dolphy D’Souza, president, Bombay Catholic Sabha.
