Hewitt hip decision could come by weekend

SYDNEY: Lleyton Hewitt's immediate tennis future could be known before the weekend after the Australian concluded a series of tests on his chronically injured hip.
 
Up for discussion after the medical men have had their say are the 27-year-old's intended participation in the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters events, which begin Monday, the Beijing Olympics and even the US Open that starts Aug 25.
 
Should he get the all-clear from doctors, former number one Hewitt would be hard-pressed to make it to Canada for the start of next week carrying any kind of form after a jet dash across the Pacific.
 
Australian reports indicate that Hewitt is keen to play in Beijing after missing the 2004 Athens Games to concentrate on the US Open, where he lost the final to Swiss champion Roger Federer.  
 
In the grimmest scenario, the battered warrior may have to instead opt for hip surgery and hope he can fight his way to fitness through five months of rehab to be ready for   the Australian Open in January next year.
 
Hewitt has been bedevilled this season by a torn labrum in his left hip and has been able to play only the French Open, Wimbledon and Queen's since March.
