NEW DELHI: Finally, the capital’s voters have a reason to smile. The state government is planning an extensive survey to list people who benefit from its numerous welfare schemes.

The government wants to find out whether the Rs560 crore it spends every year on 42 welfare schemes for the disabled, unskilled workers, widows, deserted women and rag pickers reaches the right people.

The move may be politically-motivated as it comes months before the capital votes for a new government in October.

“We want to find out if the people listed get these facilities or not,” chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.

She said the survey would also try to ensure the needy are benefitted from the schemes run by various state departments. “The crux of the survey is to identify the beneficiaries,” Sikshit said.

In the past few months, the Congress government in Delhi has been making concerted efforts to win over voters by launching various welfare schemes.
