KANNUR: Days after cracking the murder mystery of 14-year old Safiya, a domestic help whose disappearance from Goa one-and-half years ago triggered a public outcry, a Kerala Police team has recovered skeletal remains of the girl from near a dam site at Molam in that state.

A team of Crime-Branch sleuths, who reached Goa on Friday along with prime accused C K Hamsa to investigate the murder of the girl on December 16, 2006, recovered the skeletal remains from a six-metre deep ditch on Sunday, Crime Branch SP K P Philip, who is heading the team, said from Goa.

The skeletal remains of hands, leg, chest and hair and pieces of clothes worn by the girl, who was staying with Hamsa's family in his apartment in Madgoan town, were exhumed from Sangoda check dam site, Philip said.

The search operations, taken up with permissions of a local court in Goa, were suspended for the day on Saturday due to fading light and inclement weather, he said.

Police had arrested Hamsa on July 2 from Kannur. Later, Hamsa reportedly confessed that he cut Safia into three pieces and buried the body in a polythene bag. Hamsa's wife Mymoona was also arrested subsequently.

Hamsa had taken Safia, a native of Karnataka in 2005 to his house in Kasargod. He later took her to Goa. The girl had suffered burns while cooking on December 15, 2006 and Hamsa instead of taking her to a hospital, kept her at home and applied medicine.

As the girl fell unconscious the next day, Hamsa presumed she had succumbed to burns and cut her into pieces to dispose the 'body'.

Local youth organisations under the banner "Safia Action Committee" had been holding protests demanding that the police solve the case.
