ITANAGAR: A maternal uncle of Getem Apang has been arrested along with two others for his kidnap, with Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu saying on Friday that the government could not be blamed if family members were involved.

Getem, who returned home last night along with his music teacher Narendra Rai who was abducted along with him on June 18 from here, is the son of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Gegong Apang.

"It is unfortunate that Getem and his music teacher were abducted from the heart of the state capital, but what can the government do if family members are involved in such crimes?" Khandu, who had dislodged Apang in April last year after revolting against him, told a press conference here.

He said "It is unfortunate that political mileage was sought to be derived by attempting to show my government in poor light."

Home minister Jarbom Gamlin, who was present, said the arrests were made on June 21.

Those arrested were Getem's uncle Tahak Tatak and two others following intelligence inputs from the Assam police, state police and the army, he said.

On the basis of the information provided by them, the police had cordoned off a predominantly Bodo forested area on the Assam-Arunachal border, the Home Minister said.

Though the area was cordoned off from that date, the police could not rescue Getem and his music teacher immediately considering possible risk to their lives, Gamlin said.

Director General of Police Ajay Chadda said both Getem and Rai walked down on their own to meet family members late last night at Holongi on the inter-state border with Assam.

Asked if extremists were involved, he named former Bodo militant Upen Basumatry, who was among the arrested. Four more involved in the abduction had been identified whose antecedents were being checked.
