NEW DELHI: Inaugurating India’s first uniquely-conceived Hindi business newspaper – Business Bhaskar — prime minister Manmohan Singh called it a big leap forward in business journalism.

“Issues and concerns of the common people do not find a place in big newspapers. I am sure that Business Bhaskar will bridge this gap and give voice to the common man’s concerns,” he said.

Business Bhaskar should be the torch-bearer of language journalism. “You can be the strength of the real Indian middle class,” Singh said, referring to people living beyond the metros.

The newspaper, the latest offering of the Bhaskar group, is being launched in Bhopal on June 27 (today). It will be extended gradually to some other towns in the Hindi belt. While the prime minister symbolically inaugurated the launch of Business Bhaskar in Delhi, Venugopal Dhoot, chief of the Videocon group, formally released the paper in Bhopal on Thursday.

The Bhaskar group, along with the Essel group, is also the promoter of DNA.
Explaining the philosophy of Business Bhaskar, editor K Yatish Rajawat informed the prime minister that the newspaper’s focus was financial inclusion, and it would do this by systematic financial education. Singh agreed that Business Bhaskar, because of its reach and language, was fully capable of carrying out this task. Educating investors with correct and fact-based information was the responsibility of the media.

Praising the fast pace and development of financial journalism in India, Singh observed that in this respect “we are much better than many of the developed nations. While in Britain there is only one leading financial newspaper, in America it’s only The Wall Street Journal. In India, there are so many alternatives. And the readers are getting a wide variety of opinions and analysis,” all of it in English. “It is heartening that Business Bhaskar in Hindi will take financial journalism in India to newer heights,” he said.
