ISLAMABAD: In yet another move to corner an already beleaguered President, the PPP government in Pakistan has placed curbs on Pervez Musharraf’s holding meetings with foreign dignitaries without the prior permission of the federal government.

According to well placed sources in Islamabad, the presidency has been reminded through a recent communiqué that according to the prevalent rules, the president could meet only those foreign guests who are cleared by the federal government for such meetings because in certain cases policy matters are involved and the president has no prerogative to get himself involved in such issue on his own.

The foreign office letter reportedly stated that the president, who is only a figure head of the state, is supposed to discuss with the visiting guests subjects already explained by the federal government. “The president has no right to share with the guests his own views and link them with broader national interests and followed as a policy”, the letter says.

The foreign office sources, while explaining reasons behind the federal government’s action, said President Musharraf has held a number of meetings quietly with some important foreign dignitaries, including the Americans, and subsequently issued statements that were critical of the federal government’s several policy decisions.

In a related move aimed at embarrassing Musharraf, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani said on Wednesday that the President should address the joint session of parliament which is a constitutional provision and which he has not fulfilled in last four years.

On the other hand, Musharraf has stated that the requirement to address the joint session of the parliament under the constitution is vague and he knows what will be done to him if he enters the joint house.
