Nanotechnology is not limited to research labs alone. Companies all over the world have started producing goods using nano-technology, and Mumbai is no exception

Believe it or not, nanotechnology has already entered the consumer goods market in India. The applications of carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles are numerous and many products are available even in the market today. For instance, Dabur Pharma Ltd has launched 'Nanoxel', a novel drug delivery system for the anticancer drug - paclitaxel.

This drug, available in healthcare institutes today, eliminates the need for pre-medication. Hindustan Unilever is using nanotechnology to enhance its sunscreen products.

Garnier is manufacturing nanotechnology-based shampoos and other products. Samsung has successfully used nanotechnology in its refrigerators, air-conditioners and washing machines, and Eureka Forbes has used nanotechnology for more efficient water filters.

And there are plenty of indigenous companies, too. YashNanotech, which is a Mumbai- based company, has glued its attention to research-oriented nanotechnology projects that are of commercial value. Nano- Tex, a US-based company that has been operating in Delhi for the last six years, and uses nanotechnology for the manufacturing of textiles that are spill resistant and stain resistant. This company has ties with mills like Arvind, Vardhaman, Raymonds, Grasim, etc.

Velbionanotech, a company in Bangalore is dealing with the therapeutic uses of nanotechnology and is involved in the manufacture nanomedicines and nanosensors.

While some believe that it will take 10 years for nanotechnology to change the way of things, some believe it could take a bit longer, but there is no denying the fact that the next big thing is really small.
