A ‘troubled marriage’ and alleged harassment by her husband might have pushed Sucheta Anand over the brink, said police, leading to the 25-year-old airhostess killing herself in a plush Santa Cruz hotel on Sunday (according to police, it might even be late on Saturday night)

Sucheta, who had been working with Indigo Airlines for almost two years, hanged herself to death in room number 311 of Palm Grove Hotel, said police. She did not leave any suicide note, they added. A resident of Delhi, Sucheta came to Mumbai on Saturday, and was scheduled to fly back home on Monday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Sucheta’s marriage to a Delhi-based businessman was on the rocks. Just before she joined Indigo in August 2006, Sucheta had filed for divorce.

“Sucheta had even filed a case of dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws in Delhi. We are trying to get more details of that case,” said senior inspector Dilip Gaikwad of Santa Cruz police station.

The tragedy came to light at 2pm on Sunday, when Sucheta did not respond to repeated knocks by the hotel staff. A hotel attendant entered the room, using a spare key, and found her hanging from the ceiling fan, using her sari as the noose. The staff immediately alerted the local police, who rushed to the spot. “She may have committed suicide on Saturday night,” said a police officer. Her body was claimed by her brother and taken to Delhi for the last rites.

Police would record the statement of her colleagues to find out if she showed any symptoms and signs of depression before committing suicide. Her call records were being scrutinised to get details of the people she spoke to before taking the extreme step.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of our valued employee, Sucheta Anand. She will be missed by all at Indigo. Our prayers are with her family at this difficult time,” said Bruce Ashby, president, CEO, Indigo, when contacted by DNA. Indigo officials, however, refused to comment on her troubled marriage.
