Shah Rukh Khan will play himself in Makarand Deshpande's next film

Theatre personality Makarand Deshpande who plays a hapless farmer in his play Detective Maurya will soon start shooting with Shah Rukh Khan in his upcoming movie titled Shah Rukh Bola Khubsoorat Hai Tu.

What’s more? Shah Rukh Khan plays Shah Rukh Khan (a Bollywood superstar) in the movie.

“Yes, I have already spoken to Shah Rukh and he was just fascinated with the subject. I will soon start shooting for my movie with him. For the first time his name will form part of a film title, even as plays himself,” discloses

Makarand, who has cast a new face Preetika in the title-role with singer-guitarist Vasudha Sharma (formerly of Aasma band) scoring the music.

After some coaxing the tight-lipped Makarand reveals the funda behind his unusual title.

“It’s an intense yet touching story of how a Bollywood superstar acknowledges the beauty of a poor yet pretty roadside flower-seller. There is this spontaneous reaction from her favourite icon SRK, who sees her brooding. While complimenting her on her beauty he tells her to bring back her laughter. The SRK tareef, is enough to trigger off her self-awareness,” the filmmaker said while revealing his plot.

What happens next? The flower girl discards her flower-basket and falls in love with herself. The plot then moves towards how she preserves and preens her beauty and how SRK indirectly appears in her subconscious mind as a saviour.

Makarand says that he “accidentally” spotted his heroine, Preetika, while she was coming out of the Prithvi Theatre ( in Juhu) after watching a play.

“Since I did not know who she was, I had to ask someone to check if she was game for acting. Considering that it’s her screen debut, Preetika has done an amazing job,” insisted Makarand who has cast himself in the role of a villainish underworld character in the film. Incidentally, Makarand co-starred with SRK during his ‘telly’ phase in the TV serial Circus. The director now plans to convert his theatre-play Detective Maurya into a movie  only “if the response is overwhelming”.

But wasn’t the title a little  misleading, considering that its tackling the volatile issue of farmers suicides ?

“At the same time I couldn’t have called it Kissa Kisaan Ka.  My sensitive play protagonist is the detective (Shekhar Suman) who investigates into the causes of the tragedy and exposes it. The suicides are common knowledge but what needs to be probed is why it happened,” justified Makarand Deshpande.
