MUMBAI: In a movie-style action, two men robbed three employees of a steel merchant, including his driver, of Rs45 lakh in cash at gunpoint and fled after tying them up. The incident took place at around 7:30 pm on Saturday.

Kishore Dhanraj Jain, proprietor of the Efficient Company, a steel brokerage in Bhuleshwar, sent his peon Harish Gorivale, 22, office assistant Shashi Jadhav, 35, and driver Somendra Singh, 25, in a Hyundai car at 6:30pm to fetch the cash from another businessman, Swami Narayan, who has his office in Masjid Bunder.

After collecting the cash, the employees kept the bag in the dickey and were about to get into the car when two men armed with pistols appeared suddenly, shoved them in, and got in after them. They tied up the hands of Gorivale and Jadhav with a rope and snatch the cell phones of all three.

The men told the driver to take the vehicle to P D’Mello Road and then towards Cotton Green. When the car reached the Ghadge Patil godown between Reay Road and Cotton Green, they made the driver stop. One of the robbers made the driver open the dicky. Collecting the bag of money, he forced the driver to get in before walking off to Cotton Green station.

The second robber then directed the driver towards Ishwardas Bhatia High School on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road at Wadala. There, he tied the driver up, alighted from the car, and walked to Wadala station.

Goriwale managed to untie himself and the two colleagues. The three then drove to the Byculla police station to lodge a complaint where they were directed to Pydhonie police station. The men also called up Jain and told him what had happened.

According to the descriptions provided to the police by the three employees, the two robbers were aged between 28 and 35. One was dark while the other was wheatish complexioned. One of them was wearing half-pants. Both spoke Hindi fluently, but their Marathi was broken.

Sub-inspector Anil Ghadigaonkar of the Pydhonie police station said a case of robbery had been registered. “We have also prepared the sketches of the two robbers,” he said.

Asked if any of the employees is suspected of having a role in the robbery, Ghadigaonkar said, “We can’t say anything at this stage.”
