Sachin Shah, who was arrested by the BKC police on February 5 for allegedly cheating students seeking admission in medical colleges, has been rearrested, this time by the Oshiwara police, for similar offences.

The police said Shah, 27, used his status as an MBA from a reputed city institution to cheat at least 10 students of Rs90.5 lakh. The Sion resident was arrested last week from Thane and remanded in police custody till February 28.

Senior inspector Kiran Sonone said Shah used to put out ads in leading city newspapers saying he could ensure admission in medical colleges. “Students or parents would contact him at his office in Crystal Plaza Complex in Oshiwara. He would demand up to Rs18 lakh per student and give fake admission letters of prominent colleges such as Terna, DY Patil, and MGM.”

Shah had allegedly opened bogus accounts in the names of several medical colleges in various banks. “The victims would pay him by demand draft and Shah would deposit them in the bogus accounts,” Sonone said.

According to inspector D Sankhe, police recovered various cheque books, demand drafts, and property worth Rs22 lakh from Shah, who had been running his racket for a year.
