Visual effects maestro Charles Darby has some ambitious plans for Bollywood

MUMBAI: He’s conjured up the towering Hogwarts castle teeming with students, magical spells bounding off the walls, and owls flying their way around it, but Charles Darby doesn’t consider himself a magician. At least in the traditional sense.

The good news is that Emmy Award winning visual effects artist, who has been associated with Hollywood blockbusters like the Harry Potter series, The Matrix and Jerry MacGuire, is now setting up his studio in Andheri and hopes to open the doors to a visual effects revolution in Bollywood.

“I can forsee that the next Harry Potter movie can be filmed in India - we definitely have the resources for that. But we will be very choosy with our projects. We would prefer to do three to four big projects which are challenging. Since I have worked with such big franchises, I am sure they will be keen to work with us,” says Darby.

But why would a big Hollywood movie studio want to come to India for visual effects when they have such expertise in the US? Charles has a ready answer: “Well, anyway most of the visual effects in Hollywood are outsourced. When you do it in India, you save on the cost substantially. Also, since I have worked with these studios, they would be assured of the quality.”

Working on big budget Hollywood flicks was a real challenge for Charles, who has been witness to the madness that goes on during production. “‘The Fifth Element’ was the most fun and ‘The Matrix’ was hell. Titanic was long and painful but always felt special. James Cameron (the director) was great...a terrific talent for recalling any fact or figure, he taught me to raise my game substantially,” says Charles, who worked has worked as a matte shot artist as well as a visual effects supervisor on these films.
