Cauvery Tribunal verdict: TN wins over Karnataka

NEW DELHI: A tribunal on Monday ordered Karnataka will get 270 billion cubic feet of water and Tamil Nadu will receive 419 billion feet of water, in a ruling aimed at ending a century-old dispute over a shared river.   

The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, based in New Delhi, gave the ruling.   

Thousands of police were on guard in Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, to thwart possible violence arising from the verdict.   

In 1991, an interim court order telling Karnataka to release 205 billion cubic feet of water from their shared Cauvery river sparked riots against minority Tamils in Bangalore, leaving more than 18 people dead.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has called an all party meeting in Bangalore on Monday afternnon to discuss the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Soon after the award was out, Kumaraswamy told reporters that he would react only after the meeting.

Karnataka will file a review petition before the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal seeking review of its award, said state Deputy Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

In anticipation of the award, police remained on alert in Bangalore and Mysore and Mandya districts in the Cauvery belt, to thwart any trouble.

Several schools announced closure as a precautionary measure.

According to transport authorities, private buses have been withdrawn from service in Bangalore.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation had suspended all its inter-state bus services between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Sources said the decision to suspend the services was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident.

The services were suspended on routes, Salem-Banglore, Salem-Mysore, Erode-Banglore and Erode-Mysore.

Presently, the buses are plying till the Karnataka border, sources added.

Meanwhile, security had been strengthened at the state border and at the Mettur Reservoir to avert any untoward incident, police said.
