BANGALORE: Aspiring for a call centre job, but haven’t made it beyond the interview? Hone your communication skills quickly without spending a penny at the nearest Wipro BPO Academy and if you clear the test after being groomed for nearly two weeks, there will be a job offer at the Wipro call centre.

The Bangalore-based IT major has roped in human resource consultants K-10 Technologies as partner for the academy in Mumbai with a view to providing specific training to those who plan to launch their career in the booming call centre industry.

“The increasing demand for skilled candidates for voice-based processes has spurred Wipro to initiate this process,” said Achutan Nair, general manager (talent transformation and staffing) of Wipro Technologies, on Tuesday.  Wipro is the first major IT firm in the country that has set up an academy to groom people to work in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, which is witnessing high attrition and an alarmingly low number of seven people getting hired for every 100 people applying for a job.

“This is to groom people on the borderline as they lose out on opportunity due to some skill shortage. They may fall in the C or B grade, there is a possibility of improving their grades,” K-10 Technologies Enterprise facilitator Rajesh Tolia said.

The training in the academy is open for people in the age group of 18 to 35, with a 12th standard qualification and good spoken English.  The potential candidates who pass an entrance test are groomed between 40 and 80 hours in communication and soft skills and are evaluated before being absorbed in Wipro.  “Our aim is to increase the hit rate to more than seven after this training,” Tolia said.

Since its launch in September, the Wipro BPO Academy has over 100 people being groomed at centres in Mumbai and Pune. The other cities where the academy has been set up are Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.  “We provide an opportunity to candidates to meet our stringent selection process after one level of intensive voice-based training,” Nair said.

Wipro BPO has about 13,000 employees working at its call centres across the country and has seen attrition rates of nearly 100%, one of the highest in the Indian call centre industry.
