Umpire Jayaprakash retires

BANGALORE: International cricket umpire AV Jayaprakash has retired. The DLF Indian Premier League match between Bangalore Royal Challengers and Mumbai Indians here on Wednesday was his last match.

The 58-year-old former Karnataka all-rounder officiated in 13 Tests and 38 ODIs. He had also umpired in two World Cups, in the subcontinent in 1996 and then in 2003 in South Africa.

Jayaprakash, who was on the fringe of being picked for India in the 70s, took to umpiring after a successful Ranji Trophy career.
 
Incidentally, he was the umpire from the end Anil Kumble took all his 10 wickets in the second innings of the Ferozeshah Kotla Test in New Delhi against Pakistan in 1999.
 
Jayaprakash apparently saw no point in continuing as umpire when he was not part of the International Cricket Council panel of elite umpires. He now wants to help budding umpires.
