An Asian teenager has been brutally murdered in the town of Dewsbury in Yorkshire. The body of the 17-year-old boy was found on Sunday night in a park in the central England town, a victim of a “severe and long assault.”

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the youth, but said that he had suffered a “sustained and vicious beating.” Unconfirmed reports suggest that he is a Muslim boy of Pakistani descent. Launching a murder inquiry, detectives of West Yorkshire Police asked for anyone who was in the Crow Nest Park on Sunday between 2pm to 8pm to come forward.

“As it was a sunny day it was very busy and there was a large number of young people in the park,” said Detective Superintendent Chris Thompson. “I’m anxious to trace these people in order that we can paint a picture of events leading up to this incident. At this moment, the motive is unclear,” he added.

The park is in an urban area, popular with the local residents many of whom are of Pakistani origin. The police have not yet said if the attack was racially motivated, but have not ruled out the possibility either. They have not said whether a murder weapon was used or not. The youth was dressed in white tracksuit bottoms and a white Bench top. A post-mortem will be carried out later on Monday.

The Member of Parliament for Dewsbury, Shahid Malik, who lives just a few minutes walk from the scene of the murder, said he was shocked such a terrible incident could happen there.

“The thoughts and prayers of the people of Dewsbury and the country are with the family of this young man at this tragic and truly devastating time,” he said. He also urged eyewitnesses to come forward saying that the public need to get behind the police’s effort to find the murderers.

The police are not particularly popular among the Asian community of Dewsbury, particularly as many innocent people and their homes were searched after the 7/7 London bombings. Three of the four London suicide bombers were from West Yorkshire, one from Dewsbury itself.
