Project is touted to get CCTV cameras, explosive detection sensors

After much delay, the Bandra-Worli Sealink, which will connect the suburbs to south Mumbai, is touted to be ready by January 2009. And if things go as planned, all vehicles zipping through the sealink will be monitored for speed as well as scanned for
explosives.

In wake of the security threats from terrorists and the recent serial blasts that ripped through Jaipur, the state government has decided to provide the sealink with a strong network of powerful close circuit television cameras. Around 10 moving cameras placed on the railings will act as speed detectors and closely monitor the road in case of any mishaps or emergencies.

Apart from that, a contraption similar to an X-ray machine will be installed near the toll booths to scan each vehicle for explosives or any other dangerous substances.

“Installation of the CCTV cameras and the explosive detection sensors will be a big boon for us as it will not only help us monitor the vehicles but also ensure that there is immediate response in case of any emergency,” said Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) managing director Satish Gavai.

However, the immediate concern of the MSRDC is to prepare an in-depth and comprehensive on-site disaster management plan to tackle any eventuality. “Installation of CCTV cameras will be carried out in the latter phase of the development,” said Gavai.

“The disaster management plan will mainly involve rescue operations in case of any damage to the sea-link and immediate attempts to stop further damages. Also, we are making provisions for a 24-hour medical unit, ambulances and arrangement of lifeguards on and below the sealink.”

Sharad Sabnis, chief engineer of the project, said their main aim is to make the sealink hi-tech and safe for its users. “There will be patrolling on the bridge and underneath the sealink with the help of boats. The sealink will have an anti-collision device and special lights to alert big ships from venturing too close. There will also be an antenna to protect the cable-stayed bridge from thunderbolts,” said Sabnis.
