CHANDIGARH: In a case of honour killing, two lovers were allegedly killed by the girl's parents and their bodies recovered from their native village, Ballah, in Karnal, police said on Saturday.

Sunita (23) and Jasbir (26), both belonging to the Jat community, were killed on Thursday night and their bodies recovered from the village, SSP (Karnal), A S Chawla said.

Sunita's parents, who informed the police about their death, had kept the couple's bodies outside their house to send a message to others in the village not to get involved in such "immoral acts".

Sunita was married three years back to one Manjit of Furlak village but she continued to meet her lover Jasbir even after marriage, provoking her husband to divorce her.

About ten days ago, Sunita eloped with Jasbir and since then they had been living at the latter's sister Neelam's house in Machroli village near Panipat, he said.

Neelam has lodged a complaint with police alleging that some 50 people picked up the lovers from her residence in separate vehicles on the fateful night.

A medical board has been set up to conduct a post-mortem on the bodies of the couple, the SSP said.

"Even though the role of the girl's family is under scanner, we are in the process of recording statements of some other people including Neelam which may lead to further clues in the case," he said.

However, no arrests have been made in connection with the case so far.
