Rajyavardhan did us proud

Suma Shirur, air rifle shooter ranked 11th in the world, cheered Rathore from the stands when he won the silver medal at Athens 2004

Cheering and applauding Rajyavardhan Rathore when he won the silver at the Athens Games was  one of my most memorable moments.

I had qualified for the final of the 10m rifles. The event got over before the start of Rajyavardhan’s.

When we heard of his feat, I rushed to the range which was close to my range.
I was at the stands watching and cheering him on. When he finished second, I rushed towards him and shook hands. I think I was one of the lucky few who managed to congratulate him soon after. It was a great honour for the country. I really admire him and we are all very proud of him.

For me, I wouldn’t say the Athens Olympics were the high point of my career. I have done well in the Asian Games. Even held the World Record in my event. But, yes, it was a dream come true to be a part of an event of such magnitude.

I regret though that I could not take part in the Opening Ceremony as my event was held early the next day. Air rifle is the first event of the games. All of us air rifle shooters are denied those great moments in the stadium with the other participants.

Nonetheless, Athens 2004 was an exhilarating experience. Being in the midst of such great athletes was an honour. I remember how thrilled I was to see Marion Jones.

Enthralled, I would watch her train. I often saw her at the dining area. I really admired her a lot and was very shocked to hear of her being involved in doping. I wish  I could have gotten a chance  to speak with her but since she was the star attraction of the games, there was always a crowd following her everywhere.
