State introduces Fleetrac technology to help private bus passengers know exact arrival and departure timings via SMS, internet
KOCHI: For Keralites, the days of endless wait at the bus stop are over. With the introduction of the Fleetrac automatic vehicle locator and asset protection service, commuters in the state would soon be able to know the exact time a bus will arrive at a particular stop and plan their journey accordingly. What they need to do is, send an SMS to the information centre whose numbers would be soon made public or check the centre’s website.
This effectively means the end of ‘I missed it by a whisker’ and ‘the bus may come anytime, can’t have snack’.
The hi-tech commuter-friendly information system developed by Chennai-based Dhanus Technologies, introduced in Kochi on Sunday, will soon be fitted on the over 20,000 passenger buses the Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation runs. The service based on GPS (global position system) and GPRS (general packet radio service) is much similar to that being provided by aviation companies and airport managements all over the world. It tracks vehicles in real time with no manual interference.
“Private buses in Kerala shoulder close to 85% of the passenger traffic. Our service will enable regular passengers as well the hordes of tourists who visit the state every year to have bus schedules on their finger tips,” Dhanus executive chairman AD Sudhindra said.
“With this initiative, Kerala operators can now provide instant information on locations and exact arrival and departure timings of buses via internet and SMS,” he said.
“Travelling passengers would be also kept updated on the journey through LED displays,” he added.
