MELBOURNE: Australia had spent a staggering $1.25 million (approx Rs 4,69,88,767) to get India-born surgeon Jayant Patel arrested after the medico who is facing charges of manslaughter and negligence over the death of 17 patients fled to the US.

The former Bundaberg surgeon, linked to the deaths of 17 patients, was arrested in Oregon in US and faces extradition proceeding.

The Queensland Attorney-General's Department on Wednesday revealed it had spent $561,000 (Aus) (approx Rs 2,10,86,198) on Patel's extradition in 2006-07 and $690,000 (Aus) (approx Rs 2,59,30,027) in 2007-08, according to 'The Australian' report on Wednesday.

State Premier Anna Bligh, who warned against comment which could prejudice the case, said Patel's arrest was a relief.

Stating that Patel will get a fair trial in Australia, Bligh said, "My own view is that the reputation enjoyed by the courts of this country is that they are capable of giving a defendant a fair trial."

"She denied claims the government feared what Patel would reveal about the health system if he were on trial."

"I have no fears about the court proceedings," Bligh said adding, "I want those court proceedings, like any court proceedings, to be open and transparent, and on the public record."
