The police on Sunday busted a flourishing milk-adulteration business in Tardeo on Sunday. At least 1,200 litres of adulterated milk and milk packets of leading brands such as Amul, Gokul, Aarey and several duplicate milk packets were seized from hutments in Tulsiwadi in a police raid.

Among the many milk adulteration rackets busted in Mumbai, this one seemed the most meticulous, said a senior police officer. The investigators sniffed a city-wide organised syndicate that ran the milk-adulteration business. Surprisingly, the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) were involved in the raid and not the local Tardeo police.

Sources said that despite several tip-offs about the adulteration racket, the police had refused to act. The raid was conducted at the the behest of minister of state for home Siddharam Mhetre, the sources said.

Among the six persons arrested, four were women.  The two men used to work as delivery boys, said the police. They are trying to find out the other people involved in the network. Those arrested will be produced in court on Monday.

The accused have been booked under cheating and mixing poisonous substances and sections of the Food and Drug Administration Act.

“We are probing the possibilities of the local police being involved in the racket. There is no other explanation for them being complacent about such a big racket,” said a senior police officer.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused used to collect packets of milk from a distributor based in Tardeo. They would then reach the “factory”, quickly open the pack, mix water and re-seal the packs.

“They seem to have mastered the art of re-sealing it. The original and the adulterated packets look almost the same. Only on closer inspection can one spot the difference,” said Ashok Deshbrathar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone III).
