For crime that fetches Rs5,000 in Delhi, Mumbai pays Rs15k

MUMBAI: For contract-killers Mumbai seems to be the ultimate destination. The smell of money attracts them and the fact that they will get more money in Mumbai brings them here, say senior police officers.

A senior police officer said, “A gangster from Uttar Pradesh  may get around Rs5,000 for a contract killing in Delhi or UP, but in Mumbai he would easily fetch Rs15,000 for the same job. Hence, contract-killers prefer Mumbai to any other place in the country. The rates in Mumbai are so high.”

Citing to an example, a senior crime branch officer said gangster Abu Salem, who hails from Sarai Mir village in Azamgarh district of UP, was a driver in Delhi before he came to Mumbai and got involved in criminal activity, in the late 1980s. “Salem worked in an electronic goods shop in Andheri. The shop was owned by one of his relatives. Salem, who had developed his contacts with local goons, started extorting money from shopkeepers. He then got in touch with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Initially, he was Dawood’s phone attendant and later made his own gang,” said the officer.

Similarly, gangster Subhash Thakur, who also worked for Dawood before splitting in 1992, also hailed from Uttar Pradesh. Nowadays, gangster Bunty Pandey, an upcoming don, have also made his operational base in Mumbai. The gangster made several attempts to make inroads in the Mumbai underworld through television interviews and by threatening Bollywood personalities. Pandey was earlier affiliated to gangster Chhota Rajan.

According to deputy commissioner of police (detection), Deven Bharti, gangsters not only from UP but also from Konkan and rural Karnataka such as Ravi Pujari and Hemant Pujari have made bases in Mumbai.

“It is easy for gangsters from other states to commit contract killing in Mumbai and escape. Since the assailant has no criminal record in Mumbai, tracing them becomes a tough job,” said a crime branch official.
