LONDON: London Mayor Ken Livingstone has said a plaque will be installed in memory of Andrew Hargovind Jagroop, an Indian-origin student who was knocked down and killed by an unlicensed driver while waiting at a bus stop in Croydon.

Andrew, who was 21 at the time of his death in 2006, was a Law graduate who had won a place at Harvard University to continue his studies. He was killed when a car driver lost control the vehicle and mounted the pavement.

A campaign was launched to have a plaque installed at the site where he died, and to have a new bus shelter erected at Farley Road.

The bus shelter is expected to have a prominent visual impact during the hours of darkness, increasing motorists' visibility of people waiting at the bus stop.

"The death of Andrew Jagroop, a young man with such clear potential, was a tragedy felt by his family and by his whole community. As well a plaque to serve as a memorial for the life of Andrew, we hope that the new bus shelter will help to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again," Livingstone said on Monday.

Dean Jagroop, Andrew's father, said: "My wife and I are grateful to the Mayor for his intervention and our thanks go to all those who gave their valuable support."

Dilip Joshi, from the Hindu Council UK, said Andrew had an outstanding and brilliant future ahead of him and the loss felt by the Jagroop family would have touched the heart of every parent. "It is against this background that the mayor directly intervened to ensure that the shelter and the plaque is erected to help ease a little of the Jagroop family's pain," he said.
