HOBART: After his initial criticism, Australian wicketkeeping great Ian Healy on Monday defended Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for wearing faulty gloves at the SCG by diverting the blame to the manufacturers.
Healy, reportedly the first person to spot the fault in Dhoni's gloves when the Indian captain was taking a catch to dismiss Adam Gilchrist off S Sreesanth, and inform Match Referee Jeff Crowe about it, also requested match officials to be more "perceptive" in the situation.
"I don't think Mahendra would have known, but his manufacturer would have, so that's where that one has gone astray," Healy said.
"All manufacturers were pulled in to line and had to get it right," he said.
Healy agreed with Dhoni's post-match explanation that he had worn those gloves earlier in the Test and tri-series.
"Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been swapping those gloves. He has been interchanging between his white ones and his blue ones throughout the Test summer.
"Whether it's umpires and referees, they just have to be a little bit more perceptive."
The cricketer-turned-commentator recalled his meeting with former England wicketkeeper Bob Taylor who was once investigating the "fairness" of a few issues related with the webbing of a few wicketkeepers' gloves.
"I remember Bob Taylor who was on the committee to look at the webbing for wicketkeepers going to the dressing room here in Melbourne to have a chat to me," he said.
"He was really worried approaching me because I had webbings like Dhoni had yesterday, as did all keepers. I just said, change it, the webbing is not important at all."
