AMBALA: Amit Kumar, the alleged kingpin in the kidney transplant racket, was on Friday sent in judicial custody till March 7 by the designated court in Ambala.

A three-member CBI team brought Amit to the court of duty magistrate Sunita Grover on the first floor of the otherwise sleepy building. Around 50 Haryana Police personnel had been deployed to keep people and lawyers away minutes before Amit was brought to the court.

CBI counsel AK Singh did not seek Amit’s police custody and also did not object when he was sent in judicial custody. After the sentence, Amit was straight taken to Ambala Central Jail 10km away.

During the hearing, local lawyer Pradeep Batra made an oral submission on behalf of Amit seeking permission to allow his client to speak to his family on phone. The court made no remarks but took note of Batra’s submission. Amit may be allowed to call up his family from jail.

CBI officials claimed they had prepared a watertight case against Amit and all others involved in the kidney racket.

“At present there is no need to seek more police custody of Amit as we have sufficient evidence to nail him,” said a CBI official involved in the probe.
