The party will move to a new office on Rao’s Avenue

NEW DELHI: The Congress is in the process of building itself a spanking new office on Rao’s Avenue.

The party has to vacate its 24 Akbar Road headquarters, its home for over three decades, by 2009. It is in the process of selecting an architect and a builder to oversee the construction of its new office.

The Congress and BJP have been asked by the urban development ministry to shift their offices from the present huge four-acre plot in Lutyens Delhi.  Both their headquarters are housed in bungalows normally allotted to ministers or judges of the Supreme Court. However, given the huge space crunch that is getting to be a regular problem, they have been asked to move out.

Rao’s Avenue is a stone’s throw from Delhi’s equivalent of Fleet Street. The Congress is now in the process of getting approvals from different departments of the government before construction kicks off in a couple of months.

The two-acre plot on Rao’s Avenue is almost half the size of the present premises on Akbar Road.  The Congress plans to make up for the loss of space by building a multistoried party office with all modern amenities.

Apart from a spacious separate office room for its general secretaries, secretaries and their staff, plans are also on to build a large and modern media centre as well as a conference hall.

The Congress president’s office is likely to be on a separate floor along with a conference room attached to hold meetings of the CWC.

During Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as prime minister, the party had built itself a huge office space at Jawahar Bhawan opposite Shastri Bhawan. The plan initially was to shift the AICC here but this was shelved later. It now houses the offices of the Rajiv Gandhi foundation.

The Congress is considering shifting the offices of its frontal organisations like the Mahila Congress and the Sewa Dal to the building once it moves out of Akbar Road.
