On way from Thane to his Yavatmal home, he got off train at Kalyan and joined lover in Mira Road

MUMBAI: A man has a wife and kid, but wants to stay with another woman. What does he do?

Don’t even bother to answer. It’s just a prologue to the ‘love story’ of Ashutosh Patwari, 32, from Rajendra Nagar in Yavatmal. Desperate to be with the ‘other woman’ in his life, he went “missing”.

Patwari boarded the Howrah Mail (via Nagpur) on February 4 from Thane station, but his father, waiting at Dhamangaon Road station to receive him the following morning, did not see him coming off the train. Alarmed, he alerted Patwari’s brother-in-law, Ravikant Agarwal, 27, who had seen Patwari off at Thane station the previous night.

Agarwal filed a missing complaint with Thane railway police. On February 12, Agarwal came to know from a relative, who works with the Income-Tax department, that Patwari had been seen at Mira Road. Agarwal alerted the cops, and on February 14, Patwari was traced to the flat he was sharing with a woman in Mira Road.

Patwari lived at Rajendra Nagar in Yavatmal district with his parents, wife Kirti and their five-year-old son. His family knew that he would be arriving in Mumbai from London on February 4, and would be heading for Rajendra Nagar to be home in time for his son’s birthday on February 5.

Reaching the city, he went to Agarwal’s home in Vasant Vihar complex, Thane. The latter had booked a ticket for Patwari, and saw him off at Thane station. Acting on Agarwal’s missing complaint, police checked with Sahar international airport officials. It was found that no one by the name of Patwari was booked on any of the flights which came in from London on February 4. The cops smelt a rat, and when Agarwal alerted them that Patwari had been seen at Mira Road, their doubt turned into conviction. Every police station in the area was alerted, and Patwari was found within two days.

Inspector SS Dhumal of the Thane railway police station said, “We checked with Sahar international airport officials and learnt that no man named Ashutosh Patwari had arrived from London on February 4. Nor had anyone by that name exchanged foreign currency at the counter.”

Patwari said he had boarded the Howrah Mail at Thane on February 4, but got off in Kalyan around 9:40pm. He took a local train to Dadar and boarded a Virar local to reach Mira Road. There, he stayed in a rented flat in the Shanti Nagar complex. Patwari also said he had never been to London.
